A
hernia is a weakness in
the abdominal wall through
which the contents may
bulge through. If a portion
of intestine gets trapped,
this is called an incarcerated
hernia and can cause problems
such as severe pain, nausea,
vomiting, or absence of
bowel movements.
If the intestine becomes incarcerated or trapped, blood flow to the intestines may become blocked. This is a strangulated hernia. This type of hernia is painful and requires emergency surgery. Which is why, as a matter of course we recommend all hernias should be repaired. If the hernia is incarcerated or strangulated, part of the intestine may also need to be removed.
If you have been diagnosed with a hernia, and you have nausea, vomiting and are unable to have a bowel movement you may have a strangulated hernia or an obstruction, and you should call a doctor immediately.
